As evident in the picture, I can’t stop talking about the need to rethink career paths and the many ways we can add value over longer, more complex lives. In a world of uncertainty and change, it’s unrealistic to expect everyone to fit into rigid, prescriptive boxes. And why would we want to. But there are still recruitment practices that seem to require this.
Recently, I had the privilege of not just talking but listening at a Mid-Career Pivot workshop I co-facilitated with Business Psychologist and Coach (and friend) Niina Mäenpää. Huge thanks to Irene Mäkelä-Brunnekreef and Finland Chamber of Commerce in Luxembourg for organizing—and to all the inspiring women who shared their stories, warmth and inspiration!
A key take away was that your story is your strength. Learning how to frame career shifts, unexpected turns, international moves, breaks, and even setbacks as part of your unique value can be a game-changer. In a competitive and often rigid job market, as a mid-career expat, embracing curiosity and creativity is key – especially when there is not a box that immediately fits you or does your varied background justice. And it all starts with the story you tell- and sell- yourself.
Life’s bumps and twists teach us invaluable lessons. But to make them relatable and valuable to others, we need to shape the story we tell—starting with the one we tell -and sell- ourselves.
What’s your career narrative?
